Respecting the Past, Refining the Present

This 1953 Ford Popular Roadster is no ordinary resto-mod. By preserving its character and avoiding over-the-top changes, the restoration blends tradition with craftsmanship in striking fashion.

Ford Popular 103E Barn find

From stripped-down training car beginnings to a head-turning roadster, Neville Poole’s 1953 Ford Popular is a restoration that balances bold creativity with respect for heritage—a true testament to craftsmanship.

Originally supplied by the Ford Motor Company as a basic “Plumbers Ute,” this vehicle was destined for student mechanics at Broken Hill College in rural New South Wales. Delivered with little more than a dashboard, open tourer windscreen, plywood flooring, and running gear, it had no rear bodywork or seats. Students reportedly drove it around the college oval perched on fruit boxes—an experience that accounts for the mere 38 miles recorded on the odometer. Photographs even reveal the original bonnet locking tabs from its days as a training car.

After its educational service, the Popular passed into the hands of Alan Steven in Bendigo, Victoria, where it slumbered in a shed for three decades before Neville acquired it.

Faced with a bare chassis and an open brief, Neville envisioned something special. Rather than simply recreating a standard “Plumbers Ute” or roadster utility, he collaborated with the talented team at J&M Custom in Wagga Wagga, NSW Australia, to create a unique design—one that would respect the car’s heritage while elevating it into something truly memorable.

Over the course of a year, the once-forgotten barn find was transformed into a show-quality roadster. The craftsmanship speaks for itself: elegant body fabrication, flawless paintwork, and, importantly, a restraint that ensures the Ford retains its classic character.

The Australian Ford Pop Ute

The 103E Popular was only available as utility models, unique to Australia. The wheelbases were 94” (4” longer than the regular Popular saloon car)  It was available as the road-ready 103E Coupe Utility (103E-67) – or the bare-bones ‘plumbers mate’ roadster (103-84).

The roadster was supplied from the Dagenham factory in the UK as a bare chassis/scuttle with running gear. Some had rear-hinged “suicide doors”, but most had conventional leading-edge-hinged doors. Continuing the success of the 1934 V8 Coupe Utility and the Anglia A494A Coupe Utility, the 103E with locally built “well-sided” utility rear was the cheap and versatile pick-up that Australian farms and businesses needed.

In Australia, the Ford Popular Ute is a cultural icon and one of the first vehicles of its kind, known for its versatility and basic, functional design. It enjoys a similar cult status to the Model T in the United States.

Neville deliberately avoided engine swaps or over-the-top modifications, keeping the car’s spirit intact while presenting it in a fresh, thoroughly classy form.

What began as a stripped-down teaching tool is now a striking piece of motoring history, restored with imagination and respect. Neville’s Ford Popular Roadster demonstrates how thoughtful restoration can breathe new life into even the humblest beginnings.
